A root canal is a restorative dental procedure used to treat a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged. It involves removing the infected pulp from inside the tooth to eliminate pain and prevent the spread of infection. Root canals can be performed on any tooth, depending on the location and severity of the issue.
During root canal therapy, all infected tissue is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. The space is then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which helps seal the tooth and prevent future infection. This procedure allows us to preserve your natural tooth and avoid more invasive treatments, such as extraction and tooth replacement.
To complete the procedure, your dentist uses specialized instruments to thoroughly clean and shape the root canal system, followed by irrigation with an antibacterial solution. After treatment, most patients will need a dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth, restoring its function and appearance.
Every tooth has a unique anatomy, which can vary from person to person. In some cases, root canal treatment may be best performed by a specialist known as an endodontist. Your dental provider will evaluate your specific situation and let you know if a referral is recommended to ensure you receive the highest level of care.
