There are several materials that can be used to restore a decayed tooth. At My Dentist, we use tooth-colored resin composite, which blends naturally with your smile for a more aesthetic result. The size of the filling will depend on the extent of the cavity.
If you think you may have a cavity, it’s important to have it evaluated by our dentists as soon as possible. When left untreated, cavities can progress and lead to more serious issues, such as infection—potentially requiring more extensive treatment like a root canal or even tooth extraction.
When Are Cavities Diagnosed?
Cavities can be diagnosed during a comprehensive exam, periodic exam, or a dental emergency (limited exam), along with the necessary radiographs to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
During routine periodic exams, we carefully monitor your teeth for any signs of decay or areas where a cavity may be starting to develop. If a cavity is identified during a limited (emergency) exam, we may be able to provide same-day treatment depending on the severity of the cavity and our schedule availability.
Maintenance of dental fillings
After receiving a dental filling, maintaining regular dental cleanings is essential for its long-term success. Routine visits allow our team to monitor your filling and ensure your overall oral health stays on track.
At-home care is just as important. Brushing twice a day at a 45-degree angle with a soft-bristled toothbrush, along with daily flossing, helps prevent additional issues such as gum disease and recurrent decay around the filling.
What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes any oral health condition—such as a cavity or injury—that requires immediate attention and cannot be managed at home.
Common dental emergencies include persistent toothaches, ongoing pain or discomfort, chipped or broken teeth, lost or damaged dental work, and bleeding gums.
